Friday, March 11, 2022 – Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi was reportedly forced by President Uhuru Kenyatta to support ODM Leader Raila Odinga’s presidential bid or face the music.
This was revealed by Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot, who claimed that the move by Kiraitu to support Raila was not voluntary.
Venting on Twitter, Cheruiyot argued that the governor was compelled to support Raila’s presidential bid or face the consequences of his dark past.
According to Cheruiyot, Kiraitu would have faced severe corruption charges if he failed to join the Azimio La Umoja coalition.
The Deputy President William Ruto-allied Senator castigated Kiraitu’s move to unwillingly work with Raila, saying it is a sure ticket to send him into early retirement because he will eventually lose the Meru gubernatorial seat in the forthcoming General Election.
“Kiraitu Murungi will sleep for the first time today in many months. The infamous file will now stagger back to EACC from the DPP’s desk.
“The poor good old man had to choose between handcuffs and surrender of the governor’s seat. In the end, he chose retirement,” he said.
In July 2021, reports emerged on social media claiming that Meru governor, his wife, and three children were facing arrest over alleged graft.
According to a notice allegedly from the EACC, Kiraitu’s wife and three children were set to be arrested and arraigned in court over the KSh2 billion Meru county corruption scandal, the scandal that Uhuru is allegedly holding over Kiraitu’s head.
