Thursday, March 10, 2022 – The Rift Valley security team is investigating claims that a helicopter has been frequently spotted landing on Korkoron Hills in Baringo County where hundreds of heavily armed bandits pitch camp.
It’s believed that the helicopter, which is owned by a powerful politician, is used to supply arms to the bandits.
The helicopter was first spotted in early January, a few weeks after bandits suspected to hail from neighboring Laikipia County arrived in the area.
“At first we thought it belonged to the police and was carrying out aerial surveys. To our surprise, security officers deployed here denied that it was theirs,” a resident said.
It’s alleged that each time the helicopter is spotted in the area, banditry attacks occur after a day or two.
The locals are urging the Government to make public the registration details of the helicopter, its owners and its mission.
“For one to fly a helicopter or any other aircraft, one must get a license from the Kenya Civil Authority. We need to be told who owns the helicopter and what business it engages in. If it is the one supplying ammunition to bandits, it must be shot down,” Kibet, a resident said.
Last Friday, when bandits attacked Kasiela area and killed several people, the helicopter was seen the following day at 6:45 am and left after 10 minutes.
Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Mohammed Maalim has promised to investigate the matter and unravel who owns the helicopter and the reasons behind the frequent visits to the area.
The new revelations come amid claims by a Pokot warrior that Deputy President William Ruto has been supplying guns to Tugen warriors.
The warrior made the claims during an interview with NTV.
