Tuesday June 23, 2020 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has deployed a contingent of anti-riot police to Kirinyaga County to block protests during the impeachment hearing of Governor Anne Waiguru by a select Senate Committee that commences today.
Heavy police presence was spotted in all major towns in Kirinyaga County patrolling on foot and vehicles.
They are under strict orders to man the streets with the Directorate of Criminal Investigation sleuths directed to arrest organisers of any protests that may erupt.
“We are not aware of any demonstrations since the organisers did not notify police.”
“The planned demo is illegal and police will not hesitate to take action against the theme,” Kirinyaga County Commissioner, Jim Njoka.
Since her impeachment by Kirinyaga MCAs on grounds of gross misconduct and corruption, residents and County legislators have staged a number of demonstrations pleading with President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader, Raila Odinga, and the Senate to impeach Waiguru.
Yesterday, leaflets urging Kirinyaga residents to participate in county-wide demonstrations were spread across the region.
“People of Kirinyaga are tired of corruption.”
“We don’t want any more empty promises,” the leaflets written in Gikuyu and English read.
Waiguru denied all accusations levelled against her as she prepared her defence against the MCAs who have vowed to ensure her ouster sails through.
