Saturday June 6, 2020 – Deputy President William Ruto held a meeting with Talai elders in Nandi yesterday morning for two hours.
The private meeting, which started at 5 am and ended at 8 am, took place at Kapsisywo village in Nandi.
During the meeting, the DP is said to have participated in a two-hour ceremony attended by 50 elders and a section of religious leaders.
The DP was doused with milk and honey from elders dressed in wild animal skins.
He was accorded blessings by the elders and handed a cultural stick, which he is expected to be walking around with.
According to leaders present at the ceremony, the meeting was meant to prepare the DP ahead of the 2022 elections and protect him from bad omens.
“The elders handed him Nokirwet (a leadership baton) where the DP humbly promised to follow their directives,” one of the elders stated.
Further, the elder stated that politicians were not allowed to address the residents of Kaptel-Kamoiywa ward in Chesumei Constituency who had already camped outside the home of retired Anglican priest, Canon James Baasi, where the meeting was being held.
“No political leaders were allowed to address the congregation because the occasion was not a political function but a cultural event to offer blessings and prosperity to the DP,” the elder continued.
Some of the leaders who accompanied the DP for the ceremony included Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago, Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, Soy MP, Caleb Kositany, Nandi senator Samson Cherargei among other leaders.
Catholic Priests Fr. Hillary Bosi, Fr. Wilson Bosi and Anglican Church of Kenya’s Rev Canon Pasi were also present for the ceremony.
The ceremony came at a time when the DP is facing political turmoil, with most of his allies having been ousted from positions in the Senate and others awaiting their fate in the National Assembly.
