Wednesday June 17, 2020 – Deputy President William Ruto seems to have come up with a new strategy of remaining politically relevant even as President Uhuru Kenyatta continues to isolate him.

Yesterday, Ruto met with a group of church leaders from five Counties at his Karen home as the country gears towards reopening churches.

Ruto urged spiritual leaders to submit their proposals on the guidelines for the reopening of churches.

“Met church leaders of the East Africa Pentecostal Church from Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Nairobi and Isiolo counties led by Presiding General Overseer Bishop Samuel Henry Muguna, Karen office, Nairobi County.”

“We are appealing to spiritual leaders to make timely presentations to the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya established by the Government to expedite the reopening of the places of worship,” noted Ruto.

The Deputy President was pleased that the Council was already developing protocols for the systematic resumption of services in the houses of prayer in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ruto also posted photos of the closed-door meeting with the religious leaders as they adhered to the Ministry of Health’s protocols on gatherings.

Places of worship were ordered to close back on Sunday, March 22nd, in a bid by the Government to mitigate the spread of Covid19.

This was the second meeting with church leaders by the DP after a Thursday, June 11th, meeting at his office in Karen to discuss the opening of church doors.

“The Government appreciates the friendship it enjoys with the church and is dedicated to working with inter-religious groups to install protocols to be observed before the re-opening of the places of worship,” he stated after the meeting.

He also hosted a group of Muslim women leaders on the same day who were empowering and assisting the less fortunate across the country.

“We celebrate the grassroots women leaders who are working under difficult circumstances, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, to assist the vulnerable members of our society,” noted Ruto.
