Sunday, 14 June 2020 – Deputy President William Ruto is among prominent politicians from Rift Valley who financed the 2007-2008 post-election violence.
A leaked document shared by Wikileaks details how Ruto incited Kalenjins to butcher Kikuyus and other Non-Kalenjins who reside in Rift Valley, referring to them as ‘Sangari’’ (weed).
Ruto told Kalenjins during an opening ceremony for the Seventh Day Adventist Church in a place called Mailing that ‘Sangari’ ( weed) must be uprooted and burnt, in reference to outsider communities.
He is also said to have addressed the public at Bisabol Shopping Centre in Turbo near Burnt Forest and incited the local Kalenjin and Luyha communities against the Kikuyus.
He also used his finances to fund the ethnic violence that left thousands of Kikuyus dead.
Here’s how Ruto was linked to the post election violence through the leaked document.
