Thursday June 4, 2020 – Wiper Party Leader, Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, has warned President Uhuru Kenyatta against reopening the economy, noting that it might be too soon to announce the move.
Speaking earlier today after receiving donations to the Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation (KMF) Food Basket program, Kalonzo said it will be a bad idea for Uhuru to bow to pressure to open up the country as Covid-19 numbers continue to soar.
“I know that the President will be talking to the country.”
“I think around about the 6th of this month in the next two or three days.”
“I would want to urge him to really receive all the expert advice because Kenyans are not sure whether we should just go back to business as usual,” stated Kalonzo.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to provide an update on reopening the economy Saturday, June 6th when the dusk-to-dawn curfew expires.
The former Vice President warned against the premature reopening of the economy which would have grave consequences.
“I sense a feeling that there is so much tragedy around this Covid-19 thing, that it may be too soon to run and say get on with it.”
“I want to again urge serious caution, very serious caution before we can say business as usual, because that could make the difference between life and death,” urged Kalonzo.
He advised a similar approach to be adopted on the reopening of schools where extensive consultations with stakeholders have been held.
“I’ve heard since that time a lot of consultation by Kenyans saying there will always be national examinations there will always be schools.”
“You cannot allow a situation where children go back to class, infect each other, and the parents back at home and before you know it you have a wider tragedy than the country can bear,” explained Kalonzo.
