Tuesday June 2, 2020 – Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Kamau Macharia, has shared his thoughts about the ongoing protests in the United States following the killing of an unarmed black man in Minneapolis last week.
More than 75 cities have seen protests over the murder of George Floyd.
Streets that only days ago were deserted because of the coronavirus pandemic have been filled with demonstrators marching shoulder to shoulder.
Protests kicked off for another evening on Monday and more than 40 cities imposed or extended their curfews.
Thousands of people marched in New York, and video footage on social media showed looting of major shops in Manhattan.
Sharing his thoughts about these demonstrations, Kamau, who is a former Kenyan Ambassador to the United Nations made comments that some people construed to mean that he supports the killing of George Floyd.
”Scenes from US would warrant severe censure from Liberal interventionists were they happening elsewhere in the world.”
“Democracy clearly on the back foot & civil liberties in the garbage in that blighted county.”
“Those celebrating are happy to see democracy & liberties take a knock,” Kamau said.
