Tuesday, June 9, 2020 – Outgoing Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza is dead.
Nkurunzinza died of a heart attack aged 55 according to the Burundian Government.
His death comes days after his wife was flown to Kenya to receive treatment after getting coronavirus!
In a statement posted on social media, the Government announced “with great sorrow to Burundians and the international community” the passing away of Nkurunziza, 55.
The outgoing President died at Karusi Hospital after suffering a heart attack on June 8th, the statement added.
Nkurunziza ruled Burudians with an iron fist since he took over power in 2005.
He was due to be replaced in August by political ally, Evariste Ndayishimiye, who was declared earlier this month the winner of a May 20th presidential election.
Nkurunzinza’s wife, Denise Bacumi, is currently fighting for her life at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi
Denise arrived in Nairobi aboard a small Amref plane on a Thursday morning, May the 28th
Burundi leaders were heavily criticized for doing little to contain the Covid19 pandemic.
It is the only African country that did not suspend sports, including football.
Presidential campaigns, which attracted huge crowds, also went on uninterrupted.
