Wednesday, June 24, 2020 – Lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo has been receiving a lot of heat from Kenyans for representing his wife, embattled Kirinyaga Governor, Anne Waiguru, during her impeachment trial.
A section of Kenyans reckon that Waiganjo should not have been part of Waiguru’s lawyers as it amounts to conflict of interest.
Vocal Kenyan-Canadian based lawyer, Miguna Miguna, was among those who criticized Waiganjo stating that the arrangement was likely to lead to him receiving money from the Kirinyaga County Government as legal fees.
“Ms Waiguru has filed her responses with the Senate committee through her legal team led by Kamotho Waiganjo. So, long-suffering Kenyans will pay Kamotho Waiganjo, It is called a CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
“It is unethical, violates Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 and is illegal as it unlawfully allows those occupying public office to PROFIT from those positions. Over to you Law Society of Kenya,” Miguna wrote.
However, the constitutional lawyer has defended himself stating that he is offering his serves pro bono (without pay)
“Pro bono…..But seriously???? As in seriously???” Waiganjo said.
Governor Waiguru was impeached on June 9th, 2020, by Kirinyaga County Members of County Assembly (MCAs) after a motion of impeachment was brought against her with allegations of abuse of office.
