Thursday, May 21, 2020 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered Treasury to release Sh 26 billion to finance the development in Nairobi County under the management of Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).
Last month, Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, refused to approve a supplementary budget passed by the Nairobi County Assembly to fund NMS’ operations.
Sonko, who has a number of corruption cases, refused to approve the Sh 15 billion budget and nearly brought operations in Nairobi County to a halt.
But on Monday, Uhuru wrote to the Treasury and instructed the officials to release Sh 26 billion and the funds will be accounted for by his office.
Uhuru also instructed NMS director, Major General Badi to use the money to repair all roads in the Central Business District and ensure that there is a smooth flow of traffic in the city.
The Governor has been accusing NMS of undermining his authority and he denied them funds to frustrate their operations.
