Wednesday, May 27, 2020 – Popular Kikuyu singer Jimmy Wayuni Githinji is dead.
The celebrated benga musician died on Tuesday evening in a grisly road accident along Thika Super Highway.
According to reports, the singer was driving another artist identified as Jacksam Kibandi home when the accident happened.
Confirming the incident, Ruiru Sub County Police Commander, Phineas Lirengera, said the singer was pronounced dead on arrival at St John’s Githurai 45 Hospital while Kibandi sustained minor injuries.
The singer is known for songs such as Airìtu a Ruiru, Anisa, Karenjù and Mama Sululu.
In August 2019, another celebrated Kikuyu musician, John De Matthew, died in a road crash after his car rammed into a lorry near Blue Post Hotel along Thika Super Highway.
Even as Kenyans come to terms with Wayuni’s demise, it has emerged that he may have been driving while drunk.
This is according to blogger Robert Alai, who cautioned young people to stop driving while under the influence.
