Thursday May 28, 2020 – Interior Principal Secretary, Karanja Kibicho, has announced the return of the dreaded Mungiki sect.
He says they are terrorizing traders in Central Kenya.
Speaking at Ngurubani Stadium in Kirinyaga County during a tour of the area, Kibicho instructed County Commissioners to launch a crackdown on Mungiki members accused of disrupting trade in the region.
“Mungiki have returned and they are causing fear among the traders.”
“They should be tamed,” Kibicho stated.
He stated that traders had complained that the outlawed sect had resurged to extort them making it difficult to conduct business peacefully in the region.
Additionally, Kibicho lamented that the sect, largely based in Kirinyaga County, forces traders to pay protection fees.
“The Mungiki are a real menace and they should be dealt with ruthlessly.”
“Their criminal activities will not be tolerated in this region or any other part of the country,” Kibicho stated.
