Friday, May 29, 2020 – A Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) soldier and a police officer who mistook each other as terrorists and exchanged fire in Bura Garissa County have both succumbed to gunshot wounds.
Constable Emmanuel Ngao confronted two KDF soldiers, Senior Private David Mbugua and Jeremy Malusi after mistaking them for terrorists.
The three had been admitted to Bura East Sub-County Hospital in critical condition.
Garissa Police Commander confirmed the incident and added that investigations had been launched to determine exactly what happened with a detailed report to be issued soon.
“The three officers sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to Bura East Sub-County hospital in critical condition,” Fafi police commander said.
The KDF soldiers have been on red alert in the area after members of the Al Shabaab militia attacked Somali Security Forces (SSF) stationed in Bilis Qooqani two weeks ago.
The gallant KDF soldiers killed five militants during the foiled attack and recovered five AK 47 rifles and several rounds of ammunition.
KDF soldiers moved into Somalia in 2011 in an operation dubbed Linda Nchi after a series of kidnappings along the Kenya-Somalia border and are expected to officially pull out in December 2021.
