Friday May 8, 2020 – On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health under the leadership of Mutahi Kagwe imposed a 15-day total lockdown on Eastleigh and Old Town in Mombasa over the spread of Coronavirus.
The two areas, according to Mutahi Kagwe, have become hotspots of the disease that originated from Wuhan, China.
Following the lockdown in Eastleigh, police erected roadblocks near Rikana Supermarket and at St Theresa along First Avenue.
This road links Eastleigh with Shauri Moyo, Makongeni and Pangani estates.
Along General Waruinge Street, roadblocks were at the roundabout, Pumwani Maternity and Medina Mall roundabouts.
However, despite the roadblocks, residents are still using secret routes to escape from Eastleigh.
Renowned human rights crusader and blogger Robert Alai claimed that Eastleigh residents are using Kiambiu slums to escape from lockdown.
“Eastleigh guys are still going through Kiambiu (into Jerusalem) and through Harambee estate to escape the lockdown. There is nothing like lockdown there. People are using boda boda to go through. There is no lockdown. Government joking!!,” Alai said on Friday.
